06 February 2003 - Day 1

Well I stupidly locked myself out of my house tonight, so I have to wait for my girlfriend to come home. Normally this would involve a pint at the local pub but she doesn't get back until around 9:00. Finally a chance to get started on the "Red Dragon" image I've had in my head for a while.. may as well combine it with the "Diary of an image" section of the website.. so I sit at my work machine and try not to think of beckoning beers.

I've been doing tiny doodles for a while now, but they've all been scrapped along the way while I've been waiting to start on it properly. I have a composition in mind, and I almost went ahead and painted it, but I'd rather see this one modelled and rendered "properly". The head needed to be concepted first, so that's where I started.

I very much wanted something a little more brutal than the sleek form of the Blue Dragon image. Blue is a word/colour that I associate with "sleek", red is a word that brings "pitbull" to mind. The concept sketch is just that- a sketch and this thing will change with time. It's not the pose I'm aiming for in the final image, but good for modelling purposes and it does feel right. I think I'll leave it at that for today.
